What is FOG?
FOG is an acronym for fat, oil and grease, all of which can severely damage our sanitary sewer system. FOG includes:
- Animal and vegetable fats
- Cooking oil
- Shortening, lard, butter and margarine
FOG improperly poured down drains accumulates inside sewer pipes and restricts flow, which can cause untreated wastewater to backup into homes and businesses.
Commercial businesses and homeowners should avoid running FOG materials down their drains. Instead, cool hot fat, oil and grease in sealed, disposable containers. Once cooled completely, dispose of FOG in the trash.
